Did you know that yesterday, January 25th, was “Thank Your Mentor Day”?
In connection with this special day, I attended a very inspiring event last night at the Boston showroom of Mitchell Gold Bob Williams. The event was presented by the Over My Shoulder Foundation, a wonderful organization created by my friend, Dawn Carroll (of Cumar Marble and Granite).
Over My Shoulder Foundation is a “unique media-based project whose goal is TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE IMPACT OF MENTORING BOTH CROSS-CULTURALLY AND CROSS-GENERATIONALLY.”
As always, it was wonderful to attend a design event in Boston and to mingle with so many of my colleagues in the design world. But, last night was far from a normal networking event. I left inspired and uplifted by the stories shared by several speakers about their experiences of being mentored and mentoring others.
Patti Austin, Grammy award winning artist, was on hand to tell her stories of how she was mentored throughout her life and how she, in turn, has mentored young, talented singers.
I was excited to meet up with Patti again after having lunch with her last year when she was here in Boston.
Among the several speakers last night was Attorney Rick Dyer, a former heroin addict who spent time in jail, kicked his habit and turned his life around. He attributes this to the many mentors he has had in his life, including his mother who never lost hope in him. Click here to read his amazing story.
Candy O’Terry, from Magic 106.7, spoke eloquently about her mentors and those she has mentored over the years.
The Over My Shoulder Foundation is a wonderful organization. Please go to their website, their blog and their Facebook page to learn more about the group and how your actions can make a difference.
