Throughout my interior design career, I have always enjoyed attending trade shows. For most of us in creative fields where we need to “fuel” our creativity from time to time, trade shows have always been wonderful opportunities to learn about new sources, experience forward thinking design and then return to life, ready to tackle new projects with a renewed sense of inspiration.

Yet, the whole experience of attending these shows has been totally transformed! And I feel like this has happened overnight!

In the past, I would book my entrance ticket, travel to the show, and walk the show anonymously, interact with some of the exhibitors and leave without much (if any) interaction with other attendees.

The Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York is coming up this week. I booked my entrance ticket and my travel as usual . . . but these are the ONLY facets of my attendance that are the same as in years’ past.

The difference: Social Media. Through my blogging over the last year, reading other’s blogs, recently attending the Design Bloggers Conference and through my involvement with Twitter and Facebook, the whole experience has totally changed for me. Now, I “know” many of the exhibitors from online interactions and have already previewed their work and their products and further, I am meeting up IRL (in real life) with so many of my Twitter and Facebook friends, and we will experience the show together.

What was a fairly alone/lonesome/individual experience has now evolved into an exciting, social and interactive extravaganza. WOW!!

And, whereas previously, I would return to my office in Boston, dig through the bag with all of the new material I collected which would eventually be filed away for future use, I now will be blogging about all of the new products and spreading the word, and I will greatly benefit from reading other bloggers’ experiences as well.

I wasn’t being over the top or over emotional when I wrote the blog post “How Blogging Changed My Life.” This week in NYC will be living proof.

I just returned from the Design Bloggers Conference in LA where over 230 bloggers, designers and others in the interior design industry gathered for two full days packed with wonderful speakers and panels. There was such an incredible energy in the room with so much valuable information being passed around.
I just returned from the Design Bloggers Conference in LA where over 230 bloggers, designers and others in the interior design industry gathered for two full days packed with wonderful speakers and panels. There was such an incredible energy in the room with so much valuable information being passed around.

Prior to the conference, attendees were encouraged to enter a contest where we were asked to write a short post about “How Blogging Changed My Life.” Along with a description, we were to include an inspirational photo.

I have been blogging now for just over a year. When I started, I had no idea how it would affect my life or my interior design career. But, not only have I been enjoying the creative process of the posts, but because of the blog, I have also become heavily involved with Twitter and Facebook. As a result, I have forged so many connections with people with whom I would never have known otherwise. And, these connections have certainly been life changing.

One clear night, when the moon was full and bright, I convinced my husband to drive me up to the highest point in the city where we live where I was able to take the photo that would inspire me to write the following blog post:

How Blogging Changed My Life: Leslie Fine

Writing can be a lonely pursuit. However, my blog has connected me to engaging, insightful and intelligent people from all over the world. Looking up at the moon, I think about others who are also looking up and who have made the world feel much smaller and welcoming.

I was honored to be awarded with the second place prize – three wonderful bottles of wine, hand selected by WineZag’s Adam Japko. When I uncork those bottles, I will think about all of the wonderful professionals that I met at the conference and all of the wonderful people that I connect with each day through my blog. Cheers!
